There are more than just bananas in there...
Somewhere in the distance Daveed Diggs asks, “Can we get back to proper drinks?” and I am with him, wholeheartedly. But, I’m tired. The time changed last night and even though it’s only early evening, it feels like midnight. So let’s make something with a little pep to get us through till bedtime. Won’t you please join me now as we stand and make the Morning Dew.

Luck is a funny thing. When it shines on you, nothing can stop your efforts, when it turns away, even the simplest plans fall to ruin. I’ve always been a contrarian when it comes to the traditions here. 13 is my lucky number and I have a certain fondness for black cats, which makes today’s final thirteenth drink of Halloween so fitting. Won’t you please join me now as we stand and make a tribute to the tiki classic, Black Magic.

We are almost home and I have been looking forward to making this drink since we began. In fact, this is the drink that inspired me to take a shot at a Halloween series of drinks. It has the right look, the right ingredients and the right feel. This is what I have been looking for, a cocktail with class, created especially for the season. So, please join me now as we stand and make the elegantly understated, Vanished in the Dark.

The things that really frighten us aren’t witches or ghosts or werewolves or zombies. Sure, those are great for jump scares in the cinema, for scary stories around the campfire during a full moon, but they are also a safe kind of fear. Things we, as a culture, have decided are an acceptable form of scary. But for something truly frightening, something dangerous, we have to look no further than ourselves and the secrets in the human heart. So join me now as we stand and make, In Cold Blood.

There is something comforting about cemeteries. In spite of the spooky connotations in our literature and culture, I don’t know that I have ever felt fear in one. Sadness, nostalgia, loss, comfort, relief and even hope, but not fear. Well, that is not quite true. I have felt fear of the unknown, not wanting to leave the confines of the graveyard into a world without the person you just laid to rest. That is a different kind of fear though, and one I cannot help you with. There are many things we must face alone, but not yet. So, please join me as we stand and make the Haunted Graveyard.

Trick or treating in the 70′ and 80’s we were always warned about the dangers of razor blades in apples. I am not sure why, even if there were razor blades in them, who was going to eat an apple on Halloween anyway? Apples got tossed into the pile with those weird homemade popcorn balls and that house was put on the “skip it” list. Now, razors in Reese’s, that would have been a thing. We would have had to eat around the razors, cause no one is tossing a Reese’s. Speaking of those delectable cups of chocolate enrobed salty peanut butter, who the hell is Reese? I only ask because that apostrophe “s” on the end, looks a lot like one of those possession implying ones. I just hope they don’t come looking for their cups. While we ponder that, let’s explore a different type of troublesome fruit, as we stand and make The Poisoned Apple.

Episode 8 of The Thirteen Drinks of Halloween finds our hero facing an overripe orange that must be juiced with only an old school hand reamer. Hilarity ensues as we stand and make Satan’s Whiskers.

We are going to have some fun with our seventh entry of The Thirteen Drinks of Halloween. Think of this as an “after dinner” drink because it’s on the sweet side. Let’s be honest you can’t even see the dry side from where this drink stands, but what would Halloween be without some tricks and treats? So, please join me now as we stand and make The Eternal Kiss.

Six days into The Thirteen Drinks of Halloween and we are revisiting a childhood friend, repackaged for adults, with limited success. There’s a vampire, of sorts, so protect ya neck as we stand and make the Cereal Killer.

Now, that looks like a properly spooky drink for this fifth installment of The Thirteen Drinks of Halloween. Brats and ghouls of all kinds would be proud to be seen sipping this monstrosity at any of the more fashionable soirees this holiday season, and they would be right. This trifle of a drink is more fun than I expected. So, won’t you please join me now as we stand and make the Witch’s Brew.
