Corn & Oil

I have found that when you get up early the day is interminably long. Starting the day around 10 is way more civilized and helps it all to go by faster. So, the last few days of getting up around 6 AM like a normal person have been challenging. Today, I have already been to the farmers market to stock up, walked a few miles with the boy and the dog, picked some wildflowers, played some video games and worked in the garden and that doesn’t even count the things I’ve procrastinated; and it is not even noon. So, regardless of yard arms and their position relative to the sun, I’m having a drink, join me now as we stand and make the classic Corn and Oil.

Leg Spreader

A couple of weeks ago we made a Midori Sour. I did not care for it. I lamented that I had never enjoyed a Midori forward cocktail and asked for suggestions. Well, I got one. Tonight’s drink came to me in the form of a picture of a worn index card with a hand-written recipe on it, from an unexpected source, my mother-in-law. I mention that this is odd, for two reasons. Although, I have shared wine and the occasional raspberry lambic with her, I do not think of her as a drinker. The second is the name written at the top of the card. So join me as we stand and make, the Leg Spreader.

Honey Wall

One of the cool things about making cocktails from quarantine is having folks reach out with suggestions, requests or just comments, I love to hear how you are enjoying the drinks, or what you are doing to keep sane in this indefinite holding pattern that we call life. This drink is a direct result of my buddy, Matt, suggesting I try Tuaca liqueur. I had never heard of it, but he said it was good, I trust him on these things and I was making a liquor run anyway, so I added a bottle to my curbside pickup and here we are. So, join me as we stand and make, the Honey Wall.

Old Cuban

Every once and a while you stumble across something amazing. That is exactly what happened with today’s drink. After making the French 75 a while ago and then the Lone Ranger, I started researching other drinks that incorporated champagne or sparkling wine. This one seemed a little weird, but we had some cheap prosecco burning a hole in our pocket so we gave it a shot. Join me now as we stand and make the Old Cuban.

Banana Boat

This drink is not for Ann. This drink is because I wanted to make a banana dolphin as a garnish. I mean she may be a big banana dolphin fan, I don’t know, but even if she is, it is not for her. So understand going in that the only reason I am making this drink is so we can play with the garnish. When I read the recipe, I knew it was going to suck. It calls for malibu rum and while I have enjoyed drinking it on many occasions, it generally does not play well with others. It is too sweet, has a vaguely chemical taste and honestly, the more I have learned about making drinks, the less I can stomach it. I am either going to have to find a better coconut rum, or just begin making my own. Malibu is the Midori of the rum scene, we used to be friends, but the fire is gone. How bad could this one be, let’s find out as you join me as we stand and make, the Banana Boat.

Dr. Funk

I wanted to experiment today, so I am trying a refreshing “new to me” tiki drink. It has been on my list for a while, but I keep going with things I like rather than exploring new territory, but not today. Today we chase the horizon, so join me as we stand and make, the classic Dr. Funk.

Mary Pickford

Happy Canada Day to my friends up north and ex-pats living abroad! I am not sure how you celebrate this day when the provinces came together, but I hope it brings you joy and has at least a few quirky, but lovable traditions. Today, I wore my Squirrely Dan’s in solidarity and even had a piece of ham at lunch, but I called it bacon, because Canada. Just kidding, you know I love you guys and gals, seriously. If they’d let me across the border, I would be there with you right now, mildly befuddled by your Canada Day customs or lack thereof. But I am not, so Laura and I will celebrate with a cocktail from home. Join me as we stand and make, the classic Mary Pickford.

Bananas Pajamas

One of the nice things about these weird days we are living in, has been a refocus of our time. Granted, it sucks to not be going out, seeing friends, but there is a certain pleasure in not being pulled in a million directions. Life has a simplicity that was lacking. I could do with a better balance of excitement and simplicity, but you take your wins where you can get them. One of the things I have noticed, for our family and many others is the time to experiment. Laura and I have cooked all kinds of new things and this daily cocktail has been a real exercise in experimenting with new techniques and recipes. We have slowed down and taken the time to make some things we normally would not have, and usually, we have been excited to find just how easy some real treats are. That is sort of what happened here, so, join me as we stand and make, the Bananas Pajamas.

Cobra’s Fang

This drink is a result of a few things coming together at the right time. We are on a tiki kick, because that is fun. We had fassionola, since Laura had made it for The Curse of Jean Lafitte the other day and I had this sweet rattlesnake mug that I have wanted to make a drink in. Since the stars aligned to make this drink possible, well mostly aligned anyway, join me as we stand and make the tiki classic, Cobra’s Fang.
